Information for Coaches

VOLUNTEER COACHES & ASSISTANT COACHES

An integral part in the success of our community basketball program is the commitment of volunteer coaches in providing leadership and mentoring to the children.

The CMBA has adopted a Code of Conduct for all coaches.  All SFC Minor Basketball coaches are expected to adhere to the guidelines of the CMBA’s Code of Conduct.

BENCH DECORUM

In conjunction with CMBA’s Code of Conduct, it is expected that all coaches adhere to certain principles when coaching community basketball.

Try to play each child equally
ensure equal playing time but in cases where a child had been given significantly less playing time for any reason, explain to the child his/her playing time will be adjusted accordingly the next game.

Respect the officials
it is your privilege, not your right, to be able to address the official.  If you disagree with a call, address the official respectfully.  In many games (especially in the younger ages), one or both officials will be of junior age (as young as 14-15 years old).  As adults, we are expected to remember that these are teenagers attempting to develop their games and we are the adults.  As such, it will be appropriate to give them the same level of respect we would expect another adult to treat our own children.

Respect the minor officials
most scorers and timers are parents or siblings of players who volunteer or are volunteered at the table.  Scorers and timers ARE part of the officiating crew.  They are afforded the same level of respect that is given to the referees.  Mistakes will happen because they do not score keep or time keep on a regular basis or they are involved in watching the game.  If you wish to address a mistake or concern, ask the referee to look into the issue.

Keep the parents informed
—it is suggested you advise the parents of your coaching philosophy before the season begins.  If you have issues with a child during the season, talking to the parents may assist in resolving issues before they escalate.  Perhaps, asking a parent to manage the team can assist in some of the communication during the season.

COACHING CERTIFICATION

There will no longer be the requirement that coaches be NCCP Level One certified to coach “A” or “B-1” teams in the Youth Provincial Championships.

Community coaching certified clinics will be offered this October by Basketball Alberta to all community coaches.  These 3-4 hour clinics will be conducted in an age-specific manner & all coaches may be required to attend one each season.

For this season only, to be eligible to coach your team in the Provincials you will be required to have your NCCP Level One certification or attend one of these community coaching clinics.

GYM FACILITIES
It is essential that everyone (coaches, players, parents, siblings, friends, etc.) follow certain basic rules to ensure we do not lose privileges to our facilities.
Stay in the gym area only;
Take off dirty outside shoes before entering the gym area;
Do NOT bounce basketballs in the hallways;
No food in the gym.  Wipe up any spills that occur;
Clean up your area before leaving the gym;

“FOR THE CHILDREN”
Your commitment as a volunteer coach is greatly appreciated by the association and the parents.  Each coach will undoubtedly have his/her own coaching philosophy, style and outlook.   Let’s remember the primary reason we are out there though.   It is not for our egos, not for our won/loss record, not for our coaching resume…it is “for the children”.
