CMBA BOUNDARY CHANGES FORUM

May 9th, 2012

An open meeting was held on May 8th, 2012, at the South Fish Creek

Recreation Complex for SFC Basketball families to learn more about

the CMBA Boundary Changes scheduled for implementation this fall.

Approximately 50 people were in attendance, most from SFC, many

from Chaparral and a few from neighboring basketball organizations.

Four memebers of the CMBA Board in attendance provided an

overview of the process undertaken by the CMBA and all present were

provided with the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback.

BOUNDARY CHANGE PROCESS OVERVIEW:

Consistent with what is posted on the CMBA webiste

(http://cmba.goalline.ca/), it was reinforced that the key reason for

the CMBA's move to larger zones was to provide more viable pools of

players in the longer term, creating more competitive balance

between the zones and stronger organizations.

The planning and communication process was also highlighted

and Board members ackowledged that, in some instances, there

could have been more rigorous attempts to keep members

imformed.

SUMMARY OF ISSUES:

CMBA Board representatives responded to many concerns, including:

-  Loss of Chaparral and resulting loss of part of our family and critical

volunteer pool.

-  Large zones means too many players to manage enrollment and

conduct evalutions.

-  Geographic spread of zones means too much travel.

-  Less "community" focus.

-  Limited communication regarding the changes during the planning

process.

-  Failure to address the issues that were provided by SFC Executive.

OUTCOME:

While the CMBA Board members acknowledged the concerns brought

forward, they reininforced that there was support for the new

boundaries from all of the other Calgary Communities, these changes

were now being implemented and our organization needed to

determine how we could make it work.  After considerable discussion

it was agreed that our top priority was to ensure we could keep our

existing community intact and then focus on finding ways to

accomodate our new, larger membership for the upcoming season.

The CMBA Board members present indicated they would consider

entertaining a motion by our association to have the boundaries

modified provided this change had no negative impact on any other

zone.

NEXT STEPS:

May (date to be set in next to weeks) - Herb Hammer (our President)

and Brady Layton (Evaluations Coordinator) will present a motion

to the CMBA Executive to move the Boundary line East of Chaparral,

following the Bow River Valley, so those members will remain in our

new "Southwest" Zone.  If this motion is supported, the proposed

change will still have to be presented to the CMBA Board for approval.

June 10th, (time and place to be confirmed) - next scheduled CMBA

Board meeting to be followed by CMBA's Annual General Meeting.

More information regarding the AGM will be provided to all CMBA

members (current registered players and coaches) by the CMBA

a couple of weeks prior to the meeting.

Any new developments regarding Boundary Changes will be posted on

our exsiting SFC Basketball website.  Regardless of the outcome of

our efforts over the next few weeks, we are counting on your patience

and your help.  The size of our organizaiton has increased by

approximatley 50% and our volunteer base is going to have to

increase commensurately.

NEW

UPDATE ON CMBA BOUNDARY CHANGES

(APRIL 27th, 2012)

To All Families of SFC Basketball

As you may or may not be aware, CMBA is in the process of establishing some new boundary changes that are to become effective this fall.  The executive of SFC Basketball have heard some concerns/questions from our members in regards to the proposed changes and how they will effect our current association and we feel that it is important to give all our members a chance to voice their thoughts in a public forum and hopefully receive some answers to the questions/concerns that they have.

The SFC Executive has arranged for a meeting to take place on

 TUESDAY MAY 8th,

7:30 PM

at the SFC Recreation Complex(Shawnessy YMCA),

Flames/Oilers Meeting Room,

upstairs in the new section of the building,

and we are going to invite the CMBA Excutive, as well as the Boudary Committee, to be a part of this meeting in the hopes that they can answer some of your questions and concrens.

We would like to invite all of our member families to attend this meeting in order for thier concerns to be heard.

If possible, could you please RSVP to grues@shaw.ca, if you are planning to attend so that we can ensure that we have sufficient space and informaion for everyone.  IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS OR QUESTONS THAT YOU ATTEND SO THAT WE AS YOUR EXECUTIVE KNOW WHAT THE MEMBERS ARE THINKING IN ORDER TO PROCEED ACCORDINGLY  ON YOUR BEHALF.

If you have any questoins in regards to this meeting please do not hesitate to contact Cheryl Grue directly.  We as an executive thankyou for your involvment in our community and look forwad to working together with all of you to ensure that SFC Basketball remains a positive and rewarding experieince for all of our children.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to meeting with you on May 8th.

PROPOSED BOUNDARY CHANGES

You may have noticed that the CMBA website has now posted information on their website regarding the "CMBA New Zone Boundaries."

The message reinforces that the changes will be implemented for the upcoming year's basketball season.  The link below will get you to the CMBA Home Page where you will find the announcement as well as the detailed map:

http://cmba.goalline.ca/

Our association is still opposed to the new zones.  Over the past few weeks, members from our SFC Board have been in contact with representatives of CMBA as well as the basketball communities that have been assigned to join our organization.  We continue to receive feedback from our membership which is, for the most part, unsupportive of the changes and consistent with the position we had outlined to the CMBA President in our recent letter.

These concerns will be raised in person by our new CMBA Board Representative, Cheryl Grue at the next CMBA Board Meeting on April 15th. Ideally we would like to see the changes amended to accomodate our concerns.  Minimally, we expect to have the implementation delayed until next year.  Please continue to voice your concerns to the CMBA through their general email (cmba@telus.net) and copy

Cheryl Grue (cheryl@rainmaker-gbd.com) if you feel that it would be helpful.  Your comments are making their way to the CMBA Board Memebers and will be critical in demonstrating support for our revisions.

We will post an update here, following the April 15th meeting, as well as more complete information on the the CMBA Annual General Meeting currently scheduled for June 12th.
